History

In 2019 a few comedians dreamed of a comedy theatre owned and run by the community. After conducting one-on-one consultation sessions with over 60 comedians and comedy fans of all stripes they uncovered a few key themes that kept being brought up again and again.

The community was calling out to own an organisation that welcomed diverse voices into an inclusive and accessible space in which they could create fantastic comedy, and retain ownership and leadership of the organisation.

We launched as Melbourne Not-For-Profit Comedy Theatre, and rebranded to Cornershop Comedy not long after. The rest is history...

Our Vision

Where we aim to be in 5 years

We own a permanent theatre space, which is THE hub for comedy in Melbourne. It is a place that feels nice to be at and serves good food
The diversity of Australia is represented in both the makeup of our community (both on-and-off-stage) as well as in our leadership
We offer multiple shows every night, celebrating all styles of comedy
Our many streams of income allow us to pay everyone who works and performs at the theatre a fair and attractive wage
We have relationships with industries and platforms that enable further opportunities for our community
We facilitate emerging and established comedians in Australia to produce a diverse range of media (podcasts/magazines etc)
Our community has a reputation for being socially, emotionally, and creatively fulfilling
On our stage, we empower performers who would never otherwise perform
We ensure all performers, students, teachers, staff, and audience members feel safe both at our theatre and when interacting with our community
